We collaborate at work and in the community to bring out the best results that everyone can benefit from. These provide so much value to the people we serve and that's why they come back. What if education can take this approach?
You’ve heard of the legendary fantasy outlaw who takes from the rich and redistributes amongst the less fortunate. All the stories you’ve read and movies you’ve watched about this man in green tights had been about giving.
The giving of value.
If you take a moment and think about it, Labdoo is doing something similar.
Even though we don’t give out money, we do provide something else. Value doesn’t only take monetary form. Education has value as well. In fact, there’s a well-known saying by the 13th wealthiest man in the world, Warren Buffet:

“The more you learn, the more money you’ll earn.”
You may be thinking, “But we’re talking about education here. Can you really provide education to the less fortunate? Unlike money, knowledge is intangible, so is it possible to give knowledge to someone?”
What do you think teachers do? Not to mention Google.
All silliness aside, it is possible. There is actually a way to provide education to children in developing communities. The people who know about this are mostly computer engineers, as they are able to learn from the software and redesign it to their liking.
So what is this method?
Allow us to introduce open source (okay, technically you can’t introduce something that isn’t new)
What is open source?
Open source simply means that something can be modified and shared because it’s publicly accessible. That definition was simple enough, wasn’t it?
The idea of open source projects, products, or anything with that label, welcomes and celebrates collaboration. Users are able to share and exchange ideas within the community and work quickly to produce better results.
The production and development of open source has been around for quite some time. Since the rise of the internet, open source has established solid ground. Developers who wish to understand how a open source software works and how to modify it would use what is called a source code.
Open source software
The source code is a part of the software that the average computer user never sees. Got you curious now, right? Source code is something that allows programmers to change or adjust how a piece of software works.
Programmers who have access to the source code have the ability to improve the software in various ways. They can add or take away particular features to enhance user experience. They can also fix the portions of the software that don’t always function properly, what we call “buggy”.
Edubuntu is an open source software
Gee, it seems you’re getting a lot of technical terms thrown at you today. Don’t worry if you’re not understanding everything that we’ve written here, it’s okay. We don’t expect you to. It’s truly a lot of information!
One thing you should know is that Labdoo laptops run the Edubuntu software. Edubuntu is specifically designed to be used in school classrooms, homes, and communities. It’s a collaborative project between teachers, students, and parents who believe that education should be available be everyone who wants access.
Edubuntu has been a great solution to our organization and it’s only going to improve from the collaborative work in the community.
